As a city known more for politics than style, the District has never really been known as a “fashion hub.” Yet, anyways.
Michael Thomas Clothiers joined Washington’s most chic movers and shakers on Tuesday evening, who gathered at Mazza Gallery to celebrate the premiere of the city’s first ever fashion documentary. Entitled “The Politics of Fashion: DC UNBOXED,” the film took a behind-the-scenes look at the fashion industry in the District from the people who work it and live it. Director/Writer/Producer and SVELTE, LLC founder Elaine Mensah interviewed over 35 notable power players in the Washington style scene, giving these influencers the opportunity to share their take on the evolution and future of fashion in the nation’s capitol.
Mensah made the primary objective of “unboxing DC” in this film to highlight the little talked about world of fashion in a city so defined as Washington. According to the event’s press release, Mensah expressed her her vision for the documentary saying: “My hope for this movie is that people walk away with a sense that, ‘Wow, I didn’t even know this existed here.’ And on an economic perspective to think, ‘Wow, I want to invest in the creative opportunities here… Telling this story is bringing together the DC fashion community and contributing to defining our identity and determining our path forward.”
Our custom clothiers were excited to join the leaders of Washington’s style community, as Michael Thomas Clothiers is a strong supporter of the ever-growing business of fashion in DC.
