Spring Is Near! – Michael Thomas Clothiers, Washington DC

Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow, so we now have six more weeks of winter. Even with the extra few weeks of winter now upon us, we can at least start to look forward to Spring! Spring in DC brings the much-missed warmer weather back. So, the heavier fabrics aren’t needed anymore. Fabrics such as cotton, silk and linen are key to staying cool! Cotton; the soft and fluffy fibers of this plant protect and disperse the seeds of the plant. This vegetable fiber is perfect for creating breathable and versatile clothes. How versatile? One fiber can be bent and strained more than 50,000 without falling apart. It’s natural white color and cellulose cell structure helps it to retain moisture, allowing it to be easily dyed any color. Silk; what is it? Silk is a natural protein fiber. It is created by the Mulberry Silkworm to create its cocoon in order to turn into a moth. Silk is extremely fine and incredibly thin. An average silkworm can spin approximately a mile of silk in a week. Each fiber has the incredible ability of soaking up 30% of its own weight in moisture while still feeling dry. Silk itself is a poor heat conductor and reflects light, so it always feels cool to the touch while having a magnificent sheen. Linen is made from flax, a woven vegetable fiber. Flax is an annual plant that requires frequent cultivation, and only lives for one cultivation cycle. Normally, it only takes just 100 days from seed to harvest. It’s natural loose cell structure allows it to shift heat and moisture away from... read more

Layering Your Garments In Washington D.C.

There is no other way to say it, winter is here. The days are short and the nights are bitterly cold; wearing different layers of clothes becomes a necessity in order to stay warm and comfortable. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t look stylish while doing so. Layering your look is a absolute essential during the winter months. Beyond this functional role, putting some thought into the color combinations and textures can add variety and individuality to your look, as well as enhancing your options. Layering certainly isn’t the hardest part of winter fashion to get the hang of, you’re effectively just putting different items of clothes over other items. Despite this, if you don’t know how to layer properly, well then your outfit can very quickly go from good to bad. But don’t worry, if you follow some of our tips and tricks you’ll be layered in the most stylish way possible. • Each visible layer should be wearable on its own as you may decide to add or remove garments throughout the day. • Make sure the inner layers aren’t longer than the outer layers. • Choose only one or two bright colors to conservatively show off your individuality. Mix and match textures as desired. • Try a turtleneck or mock neck with a cardigan sweater for a little variety and fun. • Try one of our custom scarves to add some flair. • Wear less pattern towards your core. For example, if your top coat has a large herringbone tweed, wear a subtler sport coat pattern and a solid colored shirt underneath. • Consider a raincoat,... read more

Getting Your Wardrobe Ready For A New Season In DC!

The new season is right around the corner. Like most people, we are looking forward to a New Year with new adventures and beginnings. Your wardrobe should be no different! It’s a great idea to update and change your wardrobe as the New Year approaches! Here are four tips to help you get ready for it! 1.) Tis the season! Give your old clothes away! You should make a resolution to giveaway any and all clothes that you haven’t worn for two years or more. Chances are, if you haven’t taken the time to wear it in the past two years, you probably won’t be wearing it anytime this coming year. But don’t think it’s a loss to you! There are plenty of groups that welcome and need donations for the less fortunate. A few of these groups are: The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Goodwill, Buffalo Exchange, and more! 2.) Take inventory of what you have. Do you go out often? Do you host often? What do you wear and what works vs. what doesn’t? Think about your lifestyle and what you do often, how does your clothing work for you now knowing your lifestyle? 3.) Organize! Most closets are just in shambles. When you get back or get your clothes laundered, we always seem to be in a rush and we just toss things in the closet. Organize your closet section by section. Create groups and put them together. This will help you get a quick overview of what’s really in your closet! 4.) Keep Track! Monitor what you wear and what you don’t. This is the... read more

Bespoke Topcoats in Washington DC

When it comes to Men’s suit accessories, a wardrobe simply can’t be complete without a bespoke topcoat. Apart from the obvious of looking stylish and gentlemanly, it will greatly help in keeping you warm and dry in Washington D.C.’s not so tropical fall months. Fleece coats from your typical retail store may keep you warm, but they only work for camping trips and outdoor activities; but at your office, in a meeting, or in any professional occupation (especially if you wear a suit), it makes you look like an amateur. Just like your bespoke suit, the only option is a bespoke topcoat to match from Michael Thomas Clothiers. There are several characteristics to consider when creating a bespoke overcoat, first and foremost; fabric. If you plan to wear this coat for years to come, there is no substitute for wool. In general, heavier coats last longer because the fabric is more durable. On the flip side, cashmere coats are very nice, soft and warm; but they can show wear fast overtime if warn a lot. So, a popular alternative is a wool/cashmere blend. It is softer and warmer than wool, and last longer and shows less wear than your typical cashmere topcoat. The next important characteristic to consider is the length and fit. The coat sleeves should completely cover both the suit sleeves and the cuffs, this way when you wear gloves, there will be no break between topcoat and gloves. Traditionally, topcoats used to be fairly long, almost reaching your ankles. These were the choice of seasoned gentleman. Today, it’s most common to see them reaching just to... read more

Winter Is Coming! What To Look For When Getting A Suit..

It’s no secret that the D.C area isn’t exactly known for its warm and sunny winters. So on that note, the time is coming to push those lighter linen suit to the back and opt for something with a bit more warmth. The fabric on your suits for the coming months will make all the difference when you are forced to bear the Capital cold while still looking your best and stylish. Here at Michael Thomas Clothiers, we refuse to make warmth look “boring”! Just as in the flexibility of a summer suit, we apply the same creativity and style to cold weather clothes. First and foremost, no suit is ever perfect for year-round weather. For instance, a fabric that breathes and keeps you cool in the summer, will basically flash freeze you as you walk the streets downtown. That isn’t the most comfortable thing you can do. This is true with winter suits, in the summer, you will be miserably hot. Some can get away with it in a temperate climate, but not here in Washington DC. This all comes down to the type of material that is used. You want something made of a thicker, heavier fabric to keep you warm and toasty. A popular option is the use of Wool. Wool remains to this day as one of the most common and popular winter suit fabrics. Wool is a very versatile fabric; it drapes nicely, maintains its form, and can be spun as loose or tight as you want. One popular type of Wool is called Worsted Wool, it is known to have a shiny quality... read more

Custom Tailored Suit for Your Son in Washington DC

We all now the old saying, “Kid’s grow like weeds”, there are certain times in a child’s life when they grow in spurts. With that in mind, it seems a little counterintuitive to pay extra for a custom-made suit for a kid. Why waste the money and have an extra expense of a custom suit they won’t fit for long and will grow out of? When you compare an off-the-rack suit to a custom suit by Michael Thomas for your child, you will see why it is beneficial. Off-the-rack suits for boys just do not fit well. More often than not, they need extensive alterations, and they still don’t look very good and the fit is off, at best. By comparison, Michael Thomas suits for boys are made with the same care and fine materials as the suits made for adults. They will be guaranteed to look their best at weddings, events, etc. Off the rack suits are expensive and cheaply made with little attention to detail. On the flip side, custom made suits for kids use less fabric and are actually more affordable than an adult’s custom suit; yet it will have the same quality and attention to detail and will withstand wear like the adult counterpart. We have the ability to make the suits with extra fabric in the shoulders, arms, side and other areas. This will allow it to be let out as your child grows, and the suit will actually last for many years as it can grow with your child. This is something off-the-rack suits cannot do. Treat your son to a custom suit,... read more
